James Rodney Nelson

James Rodney Nelson Sr. or “Big Rodney” as we all called him, passed away on February 26th, 2024. He was born on May 26th, 1959 in Chicago, IL to his loving mother Florence Mitchell. Rodney was blessed to be raised by Florence and his step father, Calvin “Grandpa Cal” Walker. He attended Dunbar High School and worked at O’hare Airport for many years from which he later retired.

Rodney was married to Consquela “Lisa” Nelson whom he loved dearly. He was a devoted father of nine children. He was preceded in death by his parents and three children – Semaj, Reshawn and Talie. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, and children James Rodney Nelson Jr. (Keira), Toccara Nelson, Marcel Nelson, Marcus Nelson, Marshae Harvey and Marshawn Nelson, 10 grand-children, and a host of great-grand children, family and friends. Rodney attended Calvary Baptist Church in Chicago, IL. Growing up, Rodney loved bowling, living his best life and of course, he was always “Dressed to Impress” when he stepped out. After he retired, his favorite things to do was going on date nights with his wife Lisa, traveling (He loved Vegas the most!!), stopping by the Flea Market on the weekends to catch a bargain and fishing with his son, Rodney Jr., whenever he had an opportunity. But above all else, Rodney loved his family and his children. He was always anticipating the next event or family gathering so he could cherish every moment spent.

Rodney was a natural mood changer, he was always joking and laughing - his laugh was very contagious and he had a way of keeping smiles on the faces of everyone in his presence. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and community. Rodney’s spirit will live on through the memories shared by loved ones and we’ll never forget the light he brought into our lives.
