Our beloved mother Dorothy Jean Young was born May 10, 1937 in Hollyspring, Mississippi to Jim Bowen and Willie Beatrice Bowen. She was the eldest of fifteen siblings.
She departed this life on Monday, July 25, 2022, at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, Illionios. Dorothy accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized. She grew up in the church of God in Christ, and was a devoted Christian woman. As an adult she joined the Corinthian Temple C.O.G.I.C church, under the leadership of the late Bishop Benny L. Allison and served on the usher board.
She later joined Miracle Revival Center under the leadership of Bishop WIllie J. Chambliss. Dorothy J. Young faithfully served for nearly 50 years on the pastors board and later was appointed to the motherboard. She was the oldest living member of MRC. Dorothy J. Young like millions of African Americans migrated to Chicago in the late 1950's fleeing a Jim Crow south. She lived on the south and west side with family.
During this time she met and married her late husband Frank Young Jr, and the entire family settled in Bellwood, Illinois. Dorothy became an accomplished entrepreneur starting her own in-home daycare. Dorothy’s “Old Fashioned Daycare” helped many families. She became affectionately known as "Mrs. Young" and Grandma to hundreds. Mrs. Young was a leader, beautiful and gracious, and she was the matriarch of the family.
To have known her, was to have known love. She loved her soap operas, famous chicago style food (Lucky Dog). She instilled the importance of discipline
. She leaves to cherish her memories: Tommy T. (Sandra) Love, Terry Lee (Deborah) Love, Joyce McIntyre, Anthony (Valerie)Young and Della (Allen) Baldwin. Siblings: Virginia (Tom) Sutton, Edna (Leo) Harold, Fred D. (Mary) Moore Jr., Faye Washington, Henretta (Nathaniel) White, Sharon Ann Moore, Earlene (John) Bowen Ellis, Jimella Bowen Wilson, Carolyn Bowen Flynn, Willie Jean Bowen Murrell, and Johnnie Bowen. Grandchildren: Sparkle Pullins, Sherry (Rodney) White, Charmaine McIntyre, Terry Love Jr. LaTavia (David) Darling, Ashlee (Earnest) Horton, Andrew Young, Adrina Young, Anthony Young Jr., Giovanni Taylor, Braka Young, Amber Love, and Alana Maldonado Two first cousins John Austin and Elizabeth Adam both of Little Rock, Arkansas a brother-in-law Theodis Ursery and sister-in-law Dale Bowen both of St. Louis, Missouri. Thirty great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by her father the late Jim Bowen, mother Willie Beatrice Bowen, her husband Frank Young Jr., two sisters Francis Ursery and Christine Bowen; three brothers, RC Bowen, Mac Bowen, Benny Moore, and one granddaughter Vanessa Love. Dorothy is now at peace and resting in the arms of the Lord but her memory will always live on in our hearts.
