Gilbert “Junior” Owens affectionally known as “Gib” was born on February 20, 1956, to the late Gilbert and Lilly Owens in Walterboro, South Carolina. Gib was the oldest of seven children, of which three brothers, Adam, Johnny, and Rodney, preceded him in death.
Gib graduated from high school at the age of 16 before attending Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina where he excelled in academics and on the basketball court. Gib was an avid reader. You could always find him reading the newspaper or a novel. He stayed knowledgeable about all current events and topics of substance.
In 1976, Gib joined the United States Army where he developed a passion for cooking as he served as a Food Service Specialist before receiving an honorable discharge in 1979. After leaving the Army, Gib served as a professional cook for restaurants such as Bob Evans, Denny’s, Bakers Square, and Red Lobster. Gib later found a new passion in electronics and technology where he enjoyed careers at Motorola and WOW Cable Company.
On April 5, 1986, Gib married the love of his life, Jeanice (“Neicy”) and became the father to her three beautiful children, Elijah Sr., Jessica, and Danielle. He was a source of strength and information for the family. Gib loved to teach valuable family lessons while sitting in the kitchen or on the basketball court. There was nothing that he would not do for his family.
