James William Womack, Sr. was born on October 22, 1946, to Emmit Sr. and Marie Womack (Watts) in Chicago, Illinois. He was one of five children, growing up alongside his brother, Emmit Jr., and his sisters, Ruby, Lois, and Diane. His sister Lois preceded him in death.

James Sr. first married Peggy Chears (Williams), and to this union two children were born: James Jr. and Stephanie. In 1980, he married Bernia Womack, gaining a bonus son, Bosa. Together, James and Bernia welcomed two children, Heather and Jonathan. Bernia also preceded him in death.

Gifted with his hands and known as a “jack of many trades,” James Sr. possessed a remarkable talent for mechanics. He worked as a mechanical engineer for United Airlines and spent much of his life repairing vehicles and motorhomes, skills he shared generously with family and friends. Among his proudest achievements was graduating from the Illinois State Police Cadet program in 1975. He went on to serve as an Illinois State Trooper and later as a Cook County Police Officer, roles through which he protected and served his community with honor.

A devoted Christian, James Sr. expressed his love for God through music. He was a passionate singer and a proud member of several choirs and gospel groups throughout his life, including the renowned Thompson Community Choir.

James Sr. peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, under the loving care of Colonial Nursing Home and Rehab.

He leaves to cherish his memory five beloved children, three siblings, ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters in the faith, and a host of treasured friends.

James Sr. will be remembered for his infectious sense of humor, impeccable sense of style, and warm, charming personality. We will forever carry with us the love, protection, and strength he provided to his family and his community.

“And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” — Isaiah 51:11 (ESV)
