Joy Kynyada Morton

April 8, 1974 — October 24, 2020

Joy Kynyada Morton was the youngest of two children born to the union of Edward and Jessie Kaye Wheeler on April 8, 1974 in Chicago, IL.

Joy began her educational path by first attending George M. Pullman Elementary School and later transferring and graduating from Beasley Academic Center. She later attended, and graduated from Robert Lindblom Technical High School in 1992, where she received recognition for perfect attendance, being an honor roll student and serving as a member of the student council.

Following high school, Joy left Chicago to attend Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where she earned her bachelor and master’s degrees. While in college, she became involved in a variety of student activities, most notably pledging and becoming a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Joy has been with CVS Health since October 2000, and her contributions have greatly benefited our Account Management team. Her extensive knowledge and experience positioned her well to be a long-time mentor helping other colleagues learn and develop their skillsets.

In August 2012, Joy was united in holy matrimony to George Byron Morton at Grant Memorial A.M.E. Church in Chicago, IL. To this union one son, Joshua Ian, was bornin February 2014. Joy showered her son with lots of love and affection- always keeping her mind and a watchful eye out over whomever was tasked to provide care for him, whether at church or home. Everyone knew who “Ms. Joy’s” son was based on his style of dress, which was even more evident during events such as Trunk or Treat and the Children’s Holiday Program.

As an active member of The Lighthouse Church of All Nations, Joy was an usher as part of the H.U.G.S. ministry, and program coordinator for The Master’s Program (MP). She devoted over a decade of love and dedication to the program. Affectionately known as Ms. Joy, she was a role model, mentor, and parent to many of the students. She was an example of professionalism with style, confidence and class.

In August 2018, our lives were forever changed when Joy was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her strong belief in God, and the healing power that comes with believing, would see her through this. She tackled each obstacle that came with this illness with the same attitude and determination - take it on and move forward. Even when she felt tired, Joy was always there for her MP kids. Recently, Joy spent several weeks in the hospital due to issues from chemotherapy. Even during this stay she had her laptop and was ready to check work emails and send out the next round of MP scholarship awards. Plans were being finalized for her to be transferred to a rehabilitation facility. However, the cancer she fought so well for over two years became too much for her body. Joy made her transition Saturday, October 24, 2020.

Joy was preceded in death by her mother, Jessie Kaye Wheeler. She leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted husband, George Byron Morton; beloved son Joshua Ian Morton; father Edward Wheeler, Memphis, TN; brother Keith Wheeler (Crystal), Homewood, IL; sisters Gwen Syas (Wayne), Denver, CO; Jetone Wheeler, Nashville, TN; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
