Life’s Reflection

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

II Timothy 4:7-8

Ruth Gibson was born in Indianola, Mississippi on December 19, 1936, to the parents of John Ozie Gibson and Ida Brown Gibson. Ruth was the oldest of nine children. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, three sisters: (Patricia Gibson, Eleanor Williams and Doris Strickland) and one brother (Terrance Gibson).

In the early sixties, Ruth along with her family relocated to East St. Louis, Illinois. She received her education at Washington Elementary, Rock Junior High and East Side High School. Ruth was a great student and enjoyed attending school.

Ruth accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was baptized at an early age. She was a faithful member of First Shinning Light Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. W. M. Holbrook. She was very faithful and served in many areas of the church.

Later, she moved to Louisiana and was united in holy matrimony in October 1956 to Charlie Gix. To this union, five children were born, four boys; Donald, Fredrick (preceded her in death), Floyd and Charlie, Jr., twin girls, Donna Marie and Diane who (preceded her in death). Seeking a better life for the family they moved to Chicago, Illinois.

Ruth was employed by Skokie Valley Hospital and worked as Certified Nurse’s Assistant for many years until she decided to and later retired. She often commented on how she enjoyed her job because she loved helping and serving her patients. She had a strong passion for helping people. She and her friends cooked food and took it to various places to feed anyone that needed a meal.

For several years Ruth was a faithful member of The Lighthouse Church of All Nations under the leadership of Pastor Dan Willis. She was a part of the Mother’s Board Ministry.

Ruth was a strong woman of God, full of good works and always looking for an opportunity to share God’s Word. Because of her love for God and His Word, she organized a weekly Bible Study for the tenants living in her building. To enhance

their fellowship, she baked cakes, cookies and other delicious desserts to share with the group while studying God’s Word.

After the pandemic, and she was no able longer to attend church, she got involved with various prayer groups where she faithfully got on the line and was a part of many Facebook ministries. Whenever she had issues getting online, her sister Betty would make sure she got connected. She was able to share the Word of God and encourage anyone who crossed her path. Ruth also had television ministries that she listened to often.

Ruth loved reading God’s Word. Whenever you would call her and ask what she was doing she would reply, “I’m just studying my Bible”. She had a truly kind demeanor and never had a negative word to say about anyone. She would often comment regardless to the problem or situation: “God will take care of it”. Ruth was definitely a peacemaker.

To her siblings, Ruth was affectionately known as “Mama Ruth’. She was one of the most caring, loving, kind and compassionate sisters a family could have.

Ruth was an amazing mother who dearly loved her children and did whatever she could to help them grow and develop into strong adults. She was forever praying and speaking life into them. Ruth continued to share God’s Word and encouraged her children to pray, trust God and study their Bibles.
