     Life Reflections

Sheryl Anita Brown was born on February 11,1956, to parents William H. Brown Sr. and Virlyn M. Brown, of Detroit, Michigan.

Sheryl was the youngest of one sibling, her older brother William “Billy” Brown Jr. However, Sheryl would tell anyone who would listen she was the oldest, probably meaning the smartest.

Sheryl was an active member in church, Fellowship Chapel under the leadership of Reverend James Wadsworth.

Sheryl received her education from the Detroit Public School System graduating from Mumford High School in 1973 with honors. During her senior year of high school was at the height of the Civil Rights Era and the Vietnam War were I full swing. In the spirit of trying to affect peaceful change; Sheryl took over

the principal’s office during a sit-in with five of her classmates after graduation. Sheryl enrolled at Wayne County Community College to further her education. She referred to her time there as a “Revolutionary Period.”

Sheryl visited Chicago, IL in the summer of 1975. The plan was to buy clothes for the fall semester and to return to Detroit. After getting a taste of her newfound freedom and the need to carve out her own path, she remained in Chicago and adopted the Chicago Bears Football Team as her favorite sports team. She worked for her uncle Leon Finney Sr. in his famous Leon’s Bar-B-Que restaurant, well known across Chicago. Sheryl proudly worked for Leon’s Bar-B-Que for 35 years until the closing in 2010.

Sheryl also worked at the historic J.L. Hudsen’s Department Store in ladies’ apparel, at the former Northland Shopping Center Mall. Sheryl then devoted her career and went to work for the Berry Manor & Eastlake Properties Group, as a property manager until retirement.

Sheryl met a young man Cleo Carter Jr., from this union Tray Carter was born in December of 1977.

Sheryl lived a good and full life. She loved to cook for her family and friends and will be truly missed.

Sheryl leaves to mourn her loving son Tray Carter, devoted brother Billy Brown, cousins Renee’ Finney, Michelle Finney, Michael Finney and a host of family and friends.
