Vernell Evelyn Craig was born on March 1, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to Lula Mae Ford/Neal.

She graduated from Francis W. Parker High School in Chicago, Illinois, earning her high school diploma. She later attended Roosevelt College, and in 1963 she earned her Key Punch Certification from Cortez Peter Business School. After receiving her certification, she moved forward with confidence and pursued a career built on dedication, stability, and hard work.

Throughout her working years, Vernell served in several clerical and financial administrative roles, including positions as a clerk typist, account clerk, business office supervisor, and accountant technician. Her career included work in both healthcare and public service, and she later retired from Cook County Hospital, where she served as a Senior Clerk Typist in the Finance Department.

Faith and service were central to her life. She was an active member of Lighthouse Church of All Nations, where she served in the Keenagers Ministry, worked in the church bookstore, and helped in various ministries. She also kept children deeply involved in church, believing in the value of faith, structure, and community.

She was the kind of woman who did not want her family worrying about her—she wanted her loved ones to be okay, to stay strong, and to keep going in life. Her love, guidance, and steady presence will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
