Chanel Hankerson Obituary

Chanel Nicole Hankerson was the youngest of three siblings born to Arnold and Deborah Shirley on September 27,1985 at Ingles Hospital in Harvey, IL. Chanel was affectionately known as “nellie belle”. On any given day you could find Chanel curled up watching a western movie with her dad, performing Karen Whites “superwoman”, or Stephanie Mills “A Rush on Me” with her unofficial road mom manager”. Chanel was easy going like her dad. But could be a firecracker like her mom when it to protecting her family.

Chanel became the official baby sister to Calvin and Lashunda's friends while being a spy for mom and dad. When you saw LaShunda there was Chanel in tow. The bond they shared was much more than sisters, they were best friends. She was very protective of her big brother who was her partner in family card games. Chanel graduated from Thornton High School and attended Xzavier University in New Orleans.

Chanel Worked for Oak Forest Hospital of Cook County, and the University of Chicago in Hyde Park as a Pharmacy Technician. Chanel was a dedicated worker that was passionate about her job and found joy in serving people. Chanel was an active member of The Combined Faith Ministries in the Chatham community from the time it was established in 2006. Chanel served as a greeter and was always eager to volunteer wherever she was needed. At an early age Chanel was baptized at Oakdale Convenient and accepted Jesus as her personal savior. Chanel sang in the choir and participated in the youth ministry. Chanel was serious about her relationship with God. Chanel would set up home bible studies sharing what she had learned. Although she was the youngest, God used her as the to introduce her family to Christ.

On February 28th, 2015, Chanel’s heart was overjoyed as she said I do and married Paul Hankerson in the presence of family and friends. With this union she was blessed with a son Devyn. They enjoyed sitting on the couch watching cartoons while eating Ice cream. Paul and Chanel loved eating at Pizza Capri in Hyde Park They enjoyed joy the simplest things like shopping at Kohl's and going to Orland Square Mall to get her famous tea. As an aunt her nephew and nieces meant the world her, but October 2nd, 2015 Londyn Denise was born and she became her sun and universe… She took pride in being a mother. Her beautiful spirit and infectious smile will always reverberate in our hearts
