Derrick Bey Obituary

Derrick Johnson Bey was born in Chicago, Illinois to the union of Herman J. and Essie L. Bey on June 12, 1966.

He was the second child born to this union. He accepted our Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois where, at one time, he served in the Singles Ministry.

Derrick graduated from Thornridge High School in 1984. While he attended Purdue University and Western Illinois University from 1984 to 1987, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Chicago State University in business administration with a concentration in accounting.

On April 3, 2002, at 3:18:12 a.m., Derrick became a member of the brotherhood of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., the Graduate Chapter, Iota Nu Sigma. Shortly thereafter, he served on the Executive Board as Financial Secretary.

Derrick had a strong work ethic. In fact, he both interviewed and accepted a new job through his convalescence! During his career, he consulted with some of the most recognized organizations in Chicago including Potbelly, Chicago Public Schools, Easter Seals, and PepsiCo.

Derrick also exhibited an entrepreneurial spirit. He was a licensed independent insurance agent, started his own travel agency, and was a rideshare driver.

Derrick enjoyed spending quality time with his family. He will always be remembered for his quiet disposition, his resolve to live his life his way, his love of food, and his love for all things sports. Wrestling in general and his beloved Raiders held special places in his heart.

The success of life is not necessarily determined by accumulation but by contributions. In his quiet way, he touched many lives which, in itself, is a success.

On June 11, 2022, Derrick was called home to trade time for eternity. He is now reunited with his mother and father who preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory his brother Gregory (Tracy) and sister Leslie (Emily); nephews and niece, Gregory Jr., Christian, and Garrett; great-niece, Jaden; aunts and uncles who cared for him as if he was their own, Carmencita (William), Gloria, Evone (Les), Dorothy, his “ride or die” Darlene, and Larry; best friend, Johnathan; godchildren, Tiera, Jonathan Jr., and Jehan; a multitude of loving cousins, extended family, and friends.
