Thomas Chapmon Obituary

Thomas Chapmon, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather made his transition on March 20, 2024. Thomas was born on December 28, 1941, in the rural town of Bynum, Alabama. He was born from the union of Evelyn Sumlin and Cleveland Chapmon, who preceded him in death. Thomas has shared 61 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Gussie. Their love and devotion is a testament to the power of love and support. Their shared purpose was a focus on family, caring, and sharing.

Thomas was united in holy matrimony to his lifelong mate, comrade, bantering partner and love of his life Gussie E. Baker on June 9, 1963. Gussie and Tom migrated north to Chicago and then settled in the village of Maywood. As part of this union, three children were born, Evelyn, Torrance, and Taj. Additionally, he enjoyed a special bond with his first grandson Ryan, whom he raised as his very own. Thomas cherished his role as a father and held tightly to his steadfast love for his grandchildren. Adding more joy to his life was his extension of fatherhood to the many youths he encountered in the community and beyond.

Thomas was the beloved brother of Willie Esther English and Claudia Manningham, both of whom preceded him in death.

Thomas graduated from Calhoun County Training School (Anniston, Al) in 1959. He pursued continuing education by attending Alabama A&M College in Normal, Al.

As the primary provider, Thomas maintained two full-time jobs at Jewel/Osco and General Motors for over 25 years and took great pride in taking care of his family. Not many men can boast of this feat—managing a grueling work schedule while remaining an active participant in his children’s lives and playing an active role in the community. He served as a surrogate Dad to many within his family and the entire neighborhood.

Thomas will best be remembered for his infectious smile and spirited debates. Tom became an advocate of health and wellness after a Diabetes diagnosis in the late 80s. He took up bike riding and running and did so until his illness served as a deterrent.

He leaves behind a legacy of laughter and kindness towards others and is a role model for his hard work ethic and generosity.
Thomas will be greatly and deeply missed by those who called him family, friend, brother, and “Pops”. As the beneficiaries of his precious memory, he leaves behind: loving wife Gussie; daughter Evelyn; sons Torrance, Taj (Ariel), grandchildren; Ryan, T’anna, Ormond, Aurian, Mia Lillie; and great grandchildren; Lil’ Ryan, Ariana, Armani, Harlan, Ezekiel and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends who will miss him dearly.
